When you lift your foot off the accelerator pedal while driving, the car will immediately slow down, converting the forward momentum of the car back into energy for the batteries. Here are some observations, comparing my Tesla Model S P85+ (2014) and my i3 BEV (2016). This doesn't happen with the Model S and takes a bit of getting used to. The i3, on the other hand, will come to a complete stop without using the brake pedal at all. March 27, 2015. Our long-term 2014 BMW i3 uses a regenerative braking system that slows the car down pretty dramatically, but after just a few miles, it's easy to get used to how strong it is and modulate your pressure accordingly. The i3 stops regenerating when you drive over a bump or around a steep curve. I am comparing the normal setting. The first one that comes to mind is regenerative braking which allows the electric motor to convert the vehicle's kinetic energy back into electricity which in turn recharges the battery. It also "rolls" freely when stopped (if brake hold isn't engaged). This doesn't happen with the Model S and takes a bit of getting used to. It reminds me to plan ahead in traffic, making my driving habits a bit more efficient and it certainly saves wear on the conventional brake pads/rotors. To see when the BMW i3 lights illuminate under regenerative braking, BMW i3 owner David Vottero tested it out by strapping 4 GoPros to his i3 and then driving it around town. Some hybrids and EV's (our departed long-term Tesla Model S comes to mind) will perform a similar trick when coming to a complete stop in traffic, but they won't stop completely. This is very convenient. You will always have to use the brake … I3 used to be stronger but it got a service update last year iirc, That update significantly lowered the amount of regen.
When I left off of the gas in the i3 it feels like I'm applying the brake, which I love. This braking distance can be reduced while your foot leaves the accelerator and moves over to the brake. This must decrease range as converting the energy back to storage in the battery is not as efficient as using the energy in coasting.
Is the Tesla stronger, about the same, or weaker? BMW has indeed improved the whole traction control/regenerative braking system communication and the i3 performs much better than the MINI-E … The feeling of regenerative braking is one of the most overt indicators that you're driving a hybrid or electric vehicle. The i3 has the strongest regenerative braking out of all of them and it's stronger by a fairly large margin. Travis Langness, Associate Editor @ 3,492 miles, Build and Price Your Car
I've driven a Leaf, a Volt, and I own an i3. The Tesla has 2 settings: Normal and Low. Wow, thank you. The Model S doesn't regen to a full stop. On the i3, you use the accelerator pedal as the adjuster on your speed, whether it is going or slowing, and only use the brake pedal to actually engage the brakes when regeneration is not enough. The time it takes to react to begin braking is an average of 1.5 seconds*, which at 55mph, leaves you covering a distance of 120.9 feet before the brake are applied. The i3 stops regenerating when you drive over a bump or around a steep curve. Can anybody give me a comparison of the difference between an i3 and a Model S/X? Our long-term Model S would allow you to adjust the sensitivity in the regen-brakes, which made the car feel a bit more like a gasoline-powered car, but I'm a bigger fan of the BMW's system. I don't understand why the i3 doesn't allow coasting vs. immediately going to regenerative braking when lifting off the accelerator pedal. The Model S doesn't regen to a full stop.
I'm going to kick myself for not googling this one first as I figured there would be no way in hell somebody had written anything on it :/, I feel like the 85D is a tad stronger than the i3. Obviously, it's not easy to check for yourself when the brake lights do and do not illuminate under regenerative braking, but whether or not the lights illuminate is a valid safety concern for most owners of plug-in electric vehicles. I am comparing the normal setting. I think both regen quite strong which makes them great for one-pedal driving. The feeling of regenerative braking is one of the most overt indicators that you're driving a hybrid or electric vehicle. To see when the BMW i3 lights illuminate under regenerative braking, BMW i3 owner David Vottero tested it out by strapping 4 GoPros to his i3 and then driving it around town. So the i3's regenerative braking is a much safer system to drive with. While you could use the brake pedal as a regeneration adjuster, when you are actually engaging the friction brakes, you're creating heat, not electricity! Without application of the conventional brake, they'll creep forward slowly. Used TMV from $9,583. If you plan far enough in advance, you can avoid using the conventional brake pedal at all.
You will always have to use the brake for the final stop. The i3 regens to a full stop and prevents the car from rolling backward (when stopping on a hill). Of course, you'll want to press the conventional brake if you're stopped at a light to avoid rolling forward if you're hit from behind, but there are plenty of stop-and-go scenarios in city traffic where conventional brakes aren't necessary at all. Here's BMW Blog's article about it. It also doesn't have any creep or forward movement without an input on the right pedal.
